Last weekend I visited Paris for the first time! Though I have been to France a lot I had never been to Paris. The city was beyond everything I imagined and so much more beautiful. We flew out very early Saturday morning and back late on the Sunday. So we had two days to explore the city.
On the Saturday morning we ventured to the Louvre. The collection at the Louvre is of course second to none and the highlight of the collection for me was the 'Winged Victory of Samothrace' which date back to the 2nd century BC. The most famous piece in the Louvre is most probably the Mona Lisa. Everyone I have spoken to has said that the 'Mona Lisa' is over rated and seeing it in person is very underwhelming. Though it was more impressive than I anticipated it is not the highlight of the collection for myself.
After the Louvre we visited the Musee D'Orsay, which in my opinion is a far superior gallery. The gallery has an incredible collection of French Art that dates from 1848 to 1914. It houses one of the largest collections of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in the world. I particularly loved the Van Gogh collection they house. I was lucky enough to see Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and even more lucky to be able to study at the Courtauld Institute of Art which houses Van Gogh's 'Self Portrait with a Bandaged Ear'. I will follow up this blog post with another focusing on the works of Van Gogh.
Following the Musee D'Orsay we followed up with the Notre Dame. This is one of the finest examples of Gothic Architecture. I call Winchester, a city in Hampshire, home. Winchester is the old capital in England and houses an exquisite gothic Cathedral that dates back to the 11th Century, so I am spoilt when it comes to Gothic architecture. However the Notre Dame is second to none and the first Cathedral is the world to use flying buttresses. After visiting the Notre Dame we wandered back over the bridge Northwards towards to first arrondissement. I couldn't resist not taking a photo with my Parisian Pom Pom Headband!
